Micro Nav & BEST chosen for London Heathrow Airport

The advanced BEST air traffic control (ATC) simulator produced by Micro Nav has been chosen by the UK National Air Traffic Services (NATS) to be the new ATC training system for London Heathrow Airport. The contract was awarded by NATS following a competitive tender process involving 4 major suppliers of ATC simulation equipment. Micro Nav was chosen as NATS preferred supplier due to the ability of BEST to represent both existing and future equipment together with the system’s capability to handle the high traffic levels at Heathrow. The BEST 2D tower and radar simulator will be customised to meet NATS requirements and will be used to meet the simulation and training requirements generated by the many new operational facilities and procedures being introduced at Heathrow. These include: the New Control Tower Building; electronic flight strips; Terminal 5, Microwave Landing System (MLS) and Airfield Ground Movement Radar (A-SMGCS) procedures; and the many other airport developments being supported by NATS at Heathrow. The 8 powerful BEST workstations have multiple screens and touch input to closely match the operating interfaces of the controller displays. They can be configured easily to perform different roles, such as: tower; ground; supervisor and radar approach. Up to 8 different exercises can be run at the same time to meet different training needs. All the exercises are recorded and can be replayed and resumed to live simulation for debriefing and evaluation. This award extends the relationship between the UK NATS and Micro Nav that includes the supply of BEST radar approach and area simulators for the College at Hurn, Dorset and the New En Route Centre at Swanwick, Hampshire. Micro Nav have a successful 16 year track record of supplying and supporting radar and tower simulators for civil and military air traffic management agencies world wide. The BEST simulators provide everything needed from Beginning to End for Simulation and Training and are used by many national authorities world wide. Micro Nav also supply fighter controller simulators, specialist services and ATM software development.
