Luciad delivers HMI basis for EADS Multi-Source Integration Systems

MSI system provides Finnish Defense Forces with superior Situation Awareness

Leuven, Belgium, September 7th 2009 --[ASDWire]-- Luciad, the specialist in high performance visualization of situational awareness in Defense & Security applications, has been selected by EADS Defence & Security to provide the LuciadMap software components for the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) of its Multi-Source Integration (MSI) systems. These systems lay the foundation for improved and shared Situation Awareness for all branches of the armed forces as well as security services. A current application of an MSI system with a LuciadMap-based HMI is the Multi-Sensor Tracking (MST) system for the Finnish Defense Forces.

Multi-Source Integration (MSI) systems generate and distribute a reliable, accurate and comprehensive tactical situation picture, enabling fast and reliable decision-making.

The distributed multi-node MSI system that EADS Defence & Security has built, is especially designed for Joint Surveillance Services. The system considerably enhances automated tracking and identification during joint surveillance operations. The sensor fusion software greatly assists the officers in charge of the operation as well as the soldiers in the field.

A concrete example of such a system is the Multi-Sensor Tracking (MST) system that EADS Defence & Security built for the Finnish Defense Forces. MST combines information from a multitude of sensors in order to produce a nationwide Target Situation Picture (TaSP).

EADS Defence & Security selected LuciadMap to build the graphical user interface of these distributed multi-node MSI systems. The Luciad technology enabled EADS to efficiently develop and integrate the HMI within a short time frame. LuciadMap transforms data with different geographic references into the reference of the operator's choice and merges and renders raster and vector data on-the-fly into a coherent view. The software makes it possible for commanders to view the same data in specific projections for air, land or sea and offers the operator a wide array of 3D visualization capabilities.

EADS Defence & Security has used LuciadMap to build the visualization component of the MSI systems in order to provide the end users with a complete situation picture. The HMI provides detailed situation information through graphical and textual representation of tracks, sensor reports, and a multitude of mission data such as geometries and libraries.

"Joint Situational Awareness is an essential factor in the success of today's complex military missions", confirms Lode Missiaen, CEO from Luciad. "We are extremely pleased to see EADS Defence & Security, and the Finnish Defense Forces, benefit from LuciadMap's open and standards compliant network-centric HMI capability that helps commanders to jointly plan and monitor military operations at multiple locations simultaneously."
