June 17, 2008 --[ASDWire]-- S. MacNeillie & Son will unveil its all-new 7.5 tonne gvw Protected Escort Vehicle (PEV) at the Defence Vehicle Dynamics show at Millbrook, Bedfordshire next week. Built around a standard COTS chassis, the West Midlands-based armoured and security vehicle specialist has created a versatile multi-role monocoque design, which can be configured for a wide range of applications such as border patrol, command and control - and airport security.
The vehicle is already in production and initial units have already entered service with an undisclosed customer. MacNeillies is confident of significant interest in the vehicle, not least because of the adaptability of the basic design. Importantly also, the protected package can be contained within the 7.5 tonne gross vehicle weight limit, whilst offering a payload of around 1000 kg. There are options for protection levels, including B4 and B6 - and all high impact areas utilise composite materials.
The interior is fully air-conditioned and generous stowage is provided for kit, including weapons. A range of seating configurations is available - and internal dimensions could also accommodate a multi-stretcher layout, enabling the unit to fulfil a potential battlefield ambulance role. The design also caters for the need for optimum situational awareness - with a roof hatch, surveillance camera mounts and a public address system featuring in the specification.
A number of refinements, including LED red and white interior lighting, are included to support both overt and covert operations. A heavy-duty electrical system, with battery management, is fitted to cater for demand - and the current unit is EMC tested to LAN Class A. The unit is also ECM compatible.
The chassis, running gear and front cowl - to scuttle height - utilises the Mercedes Benz Vario light commercial package. The whole vehicle is type approved and the development programme has included hot and cold climatic testing, handling tests and operational trials both on- and off-road. The vehicle is powered by a Mercedes Benz OM904 LA Euro IV diesel engine, developing 177bhp at 2200rpm and torque of 675Nm at 1200-1600rpm. Transmission is 6-speed manual and variants include the option of two or four-wheel drive - and left-hand or right-hand drive.
MacNeillie's Commercial Director, Nigel Rowley says, "The new PEV package demonstrates, once again, our ability to design and integrate COTS-based solutions for very specific operational requirements. The monocoque shell package is readily adaptable for other vehicles, configurations and applications - and we see escalating demand for a protected unit, within the 7.5 tonne gvw category, particularly for border controls and other security sensitive applications".
Also on show at DVD will be an example of MacNeillie's MACS (Military Armoured Carrier System) Protected Patrol Vehicle (PPV) family, announced last year. The base platform is designed to suit a range of configurations, including forward and normal control, using a monocoque hull and standard COTS components. Other MacNeillie exhibits will demonstrate the significant range of armoured, security and specialist vehicle engineering available.
